Moving in the first home

The List of Household Items Every Home Needs

Are you in the middle of your move into your 1st home and need help ASAP to figure out what to buy? Or maybe you are fed up with everything you have in your home and want to declutter? This list of household items needed for a new home will help you know what to buy and what can go.

Why did I create a household items list?

I remember when I moved into my 1st apartment. Suddenly, I needed many household items, from a pan to bath towels and a comforter. Luckily, my mother helped me buy the essentials. I can’t lend you my mother, but here is the next best thing to create a well-equipped and functional home without the clutter or the overwhelm of living on your own for the 1st time. That’s also the perfect list if you want to downsize and go back to the essentials.

Your room-by-room list of household items

The kitchen essentials

Your main goal in the kitchen will revolve around food: prepping, storing, and eating it. For that you’ll need:

  • Cookware: 2 pots (a small one and a larger one), 1 or 2 pans, a baking sheet if you have an oven, and a mixing bowl.
  • Utensils: a spatula, a wooden spoon, a ladle, a whisk.
  • Cutlery & Knives: Knives, forks, spoons, and a chopping knife.
  • Glassware: Glasses, bowls, and plates (at least 2 per person)
  • Small Appliances: A microwave, a hand blender with whisk attachment, and a coffee maker.
  • Storage & Containers: Food storage containers and zip-lock bags.

The bare minimum things for a home: the living room

a clear living room with a couch, a coffee table, a shelf and a plant

This area is dedicated to relaxation and time spent with friends or family. You don’t want to fill this space, but it still needs some coziness.

  • Seating & Furniture: a couch or armchairs, a coffee table.
  • Entertainment: TV, bookshelf, and some storage for your hobbies.
  • Lighting: a floor lamp or table lamps.
  • Decor (optional, but gives a welcoming vibe): Throw pillows, rugs, plants

The list of household items for your bathroom

A tidy black and white bathroom

Get the necessities to wash yourself in an organized room! Keep things simple at first. You can add more household items later if needed.

  • Toiletries: soap, shampoo, body wash, toothbrush and toothpaste, a hairbrush.
  • Cleaning Essentials: a toilet brush, a toilet cleaner, a multi-purpose cleaner, 2 sponges (one for the toilets, the other for the rest).
  • Storage Solutions: a shower caddy, baskets, drawer organizers.
  • Towels & Linens: Bath towels (at least 2 for each person), hand towels (at least 2), and washcloths (if you use them).

The bedroom basics

A simple bedroom can still be cozy.

We don’t need so many things in the bedroom. After all, we mostly sleep and store our clothes there!

  • Bedding: a bed, pillows, sheets (at least 2 sets), blankets (or comforter), and a mattress protector.
  • Clothing Storage: a chest of drawers or a wardrobe if you don’t have a closet, hangers, and drawer organizers, depending on your situation.
  • Lighting: Bedside tables and lamps.

Your list of household items for your home office

You don't need a large space for your home office

Even if you don’t have a dedicated room, you’ll need some items to stay on top of administrative stuff. Yes, I know, that’s not fun!

  • Furniture: somewhere to sit (it can be a desk with a chair or your kitchen table) and a storage unit (if needed).
  • Tech Gear: a power strip for the chargers.
  • Organization Supplies: Some drawer organizers and file folders.

The cheap household items you’ll need to clean your home

Your cleaning supplies don't have to cost an arm.

You can’t enjoy your home if you don’t clean it at least once in a while, but no need to break the bank for that!

  • Tools: a broom with its dustpan, a mop, a vacuum (only necessary if you have rugs or carpet, else, you can go with the broom only), and a few rags (you don’t need fancy microfibers).
  • Cleaning supplies: an all-purpose cleaner, glass cleaner, dish soap and sponges.
  • Laundry supplies: Some detergent, a drying rack, and an iron if your clothes need to be ironed.

The miscellaneous essentials

I couldn't make a list of household items without the first aid kit.

We often forget them until we need them. In that case, you’ll be happy to have been foresighted!

  • First Aid Kit: Bandages, antiseptic wipes(or an antiseptic bottle and cotton balls), thermometer.
  • Tool Kit: Hammer, screwdriver set, measuring tape.
  • Safety Items: Fire extinguisher, smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
  • Emergency Supplies: Flashlight, batteries, emergency contact list.

A home can be inviting yet simple!

At first, we may not see what we absolutely need in our new home and what we can buy later (or not at all). That’s when a good old list like this one helps, so you have all you need for convenience and comfort.

Depending on your lifestyle or needs, you may have to add some personal essentials. Do you love to cook? You may add an oven, more pots, and a shopping board. If you have a child, they will need space for their toys and to do their homework.
