Habits seem mundane things that we can live without and be just fine with, but those small habits make significant changes over time. It’s like the Colorado water that seems to pass by without any effect on the rocks around, but remember, it created the Grand Canyon! But you may wonder which habit to focus on. So, here is a list of habit examples that help you keep your home cleaner.
What’s the difference between routines and habits?
Put simply, routines are a set of habits. You can have several routines during your day: a morning routine to help you get ready, an evening routine for the daily chores when returning from work, a nighttime one to unwind… They allow you to do things quicker and on autopilot without relying on motivation.
Some examples of good habits

You can build habits for almost every part of your life. For example, you may want to improve your health and exercise 3 times a week. Another example would be to start your working day by prioritizing your tasks so you get the most important ones done.
You can have a homemade balanced breakfast daily to manage your energy better during the day.
A good money-wise habit is to budget monthly to avoid overspending.
My list of good habits for a clean home
Daily habits can tremendously help you keep your home clean, but we don’t want to overcomplicate them. Let’s start this list of quick habit examples you can add to your day easily.
Habit examples in the kitchen

Sweep kitchen floor
The kitchen floor sees lots of crumbs and dust. By sweeping it daily, you will avoid strewing them across the whole house and keep your home cleaner without much effort.
Clear off the kitchen table
The table is often a central point of the kitchen. Clearing it daily will help you keep the room tidier and make mealtime more enjoyable.
Do the dishes
Whether we like it or not, we need to do the dishes regularly. At least, when you wash them daily, things don’t have time to stick and dry.
Wipe the stovetop
I hate scrubbing the stovetop so much that I decided to wipe it daily to avoid grease and other food burning day after day to the point I have to scrub for an hour to get things clean. Talk about breaking down a massive task into smaller ones!
Examples of good habits in the bathroom

Squeegee the shower walls
Squeegeeing the shower walls reduces the limescale deposits on them. You’ll thank your past self when you see that you need to descale them less often while keeping the same clean feeling.
Wipe the bathroom sink and counters
You don’t need to fully clean them daily, but by wiping them, you will refresh them in seconds, perfect to add a little spa-like sensation for the next day!

Make the bed
It gives the tone for the day and almost instantly gives your bedroom a tidier look. That will motivate you to keep the rest of the room cleaner as well.
Put a load of laundry
By building the habit of putting a load of laundry daily, you’ll manage to stay on top of it without much fuss. No more frantic search for your favorite top. It’s in your closet!
Pickup daily mess
We live in our homes, and inevitably, we create small messes by forgetting to bring back a glass in the kitchen or taking a throw blanket to watch a film comfortably without folding it afterward… Taking care of those messes before they grow will make cleaning easier as you won’t have to tidy up before it.
Air the house daily

Believe it or not, on average, indoor air is more polluted than outdoor air. You don’t need to let the windows open for more than a few minutes to improve the air quality, and as the walls will keep their temperature, you’ll be comfortable again in no time!
Follow a cleaning routine
A cleaning routine will help you stay on top of regular tasks and remind you of the less current ones. It doesn’t need to be very sophisticated. You can start with a weekly schedule and keep building it based on this 1st step.
Among other tasks, my weekly routine includes vacuuming the floors, cleaning the bathroom (sink, shower tray, and toilets), washing the kitchen countertops and sink, and scrubbing the stovetop.
How to build a habit
First, we don’t need to wait for an external event, like the New Year, to start building habits.
My 1st tip to successfully build habits is to focus on one at a time. I know it’s more exciting to revamp your whole routine, but as the motivation begins to lower, it will be easier to follow up with one tiny habit than a multi-step routine.
Your motivation will vary depending on the day. One way to keep it strong is to know your why. Why is it important for you to build this habit?
Sometimes, your motivation won’t be enough, but that’s OK. That’s when you need to rely on external motivation like the one you’ll get during my 30-day habit-building challenge, the Lazy Cat’s Guide to a Clean Home.
